Optimization of carbon media in Biogas desulfurisation

Created Tuesday, 12 October 2021

Biogas is gaining significance globally as recycled organic waste replaces non-sustainable fossil fuel sources of energy production. When organic waste is digested in an anaerobic process, the resulting methane – the fuel for energy production – can be heavily contaminated with unwanted substances that can cause corrosion or abrasion. Molecular filtration protects the membranes that clean your biogas before injection along with controlling the engine corrosion and abrasion with adsorbents in leak-free housings.

WHAT IS IN THE AIR THAT WE DO NOT SEE? BIOGAS CAN CONTAIN THESE DAMAGING SUBSTANCES:

  • Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) - If high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide are allowed to reach the gas engine where the methane is combusted to generate energy, the engine can suffer internal corrosion due to a combination of acidic gas and high temperatures.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as siloxanes - Another risk for biogas engines comes from siloxanes and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds are widely used in consumer products that reach land-fill disposal sites.
  • Ammonia (NH3) - The concentration of ammonia varies deeply in the process but it has an inhibitory effect on important microbes involved in biogas formation.

HARMFUL EFFECTS OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE CONTAMINATION

  • Smell/Odours
  • Irritants
  • Toxic/Poison
  • Corrosion

A MEDIA WITH A HIGH ABSORBENT POWER

Camfil offers the market a cost-effective media for the removal of hydrogen sulphide generated during the production of biogas by anaerobic digestion: CamPure 32. This high-quality chemical adsorbent is a combination of adsorbents, treated by a dedicated chemical impregnation system. This media has a lower dust content compared to classical carbon and also exhibits a longer lifetime. CamPure 32 is certified in accordance with  UL 900. The low flammability characteristics make it a much safer media than carbon. This is an important feature for use in an environment where ignition of adsorbent media beds is a real risk, e.g. biogas production.

DESULFURIZATION OF BIOGAS WITH CAMPURE 32

CamPure 32 is the new ideal Camfil molecular filtration media for the removal of hydrogen sulfide during the production of biogas in an anaerobic process.

MAIN ADVANTAGES OF CAMPURE 32 MEDIA:

  • High-quality chemical adsorbent
  • Effective for the treatment of hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide
  • UL 900 rated for flammability
  • Vacuum packed to ensure its high quality and low dust content

Achieving a cost-effective molecular filtration solution and its benefits

There are many ways of solving molecular filtration in biogas applications. Activated carbon or alumina media are deployed as filter deep beds between perforated metal sheets in a wide range of heavy-duty housings, and as single or multiple stages depending on concentration and flow requirements.
