From Invisible Problem to Measurable Air Quality

Jörgen Ek, coordinator for Mertz improvement work, knew that the air inside the cross-dock terminal in Malmö was dirty and dusty. But he did not know how dirty the air was or what to do about it. Camfil was contacted and a site visit with visual inspection and interviews was carried out. It was decided to start an air quality measurement. The measurement is carried out with the AirImageTM air quality sensor which, together with its analysis system, presents values in real time.
In general, logistics facilities often have high levels of indoor pollutants. Measurements showed that this was also the case at Mertz. The terminal is located in the port of Malmö, with several large, heavily trafficked roads around it, a major railway hub right outside the doors and large numbers of trucks loading and unloading every day. This means that the outdoor air in the area has high levels of air pollution, which finds its way into the premises.
The measurement showed specifically high levels of PM1, which are the very smallest particles, and thus the most hazardous to health for people to breathe in. The measurements showed that the terminal's own operations also occasionally caused elevated levels of pollutants.
Adaptations for optimal operation and energy conditions
Based on Camfil's experience from similar environments, combined with Mertz's conditions, Camfil proposed ceiling-mounted air purifiers CC6000 together with the AirImageTM air quality sensor.
In addition to visualising the levels of air pollution, AirImageTM can control the air purifiers so they are used optimally in terms of air cleaning and energy use. AirImageTM also makes it possible to make operational adjustments remotely when needed.
Protect people
After 1 month, measurements in Mertz’s premises showed that pollution levels had been halved, and at times peaks in the measurement graph showed that pollution levels had decreased by as much as 78%. This has a direct positive effect on the employees. The air we breathe affects both our health and how we perform. A passing forklift driver was asked whether he had noticed any difference in the air lately.
Jörgen explains that several employees have commented that they have noticed a clear improvement in air quality. Equipment such as forklifts and doors also function better when they are clean, which increases operational reliability and improves efficiency at the terminal.
Mertz also has office space in the building. For these areas, City M air purifiers were ordered so that the office staff can also breathe clean and healthy air.

Save energy and reduce heating costs
In addition to cleaner air, there are also opportunities to save energy with the help of air purifiers. Simply put, warm air is moved from the ceiling down to floor level using the air movements that are used to clean the air.
